This is Friday’s school group. The water is so warm that we are almost all in baggies. Summer is awesome to be surfing in the Strand. If you want your kids to join, come Tue-Fri 16:00 to sign up.

The cost this year will be R700 per term. (Max 10 lessons) If there are only 8 weeks in the term then you can come twice on some weeks to make up the 10 lessons.

Hopefully now people will stop asking us what we are doing with all the surfboards…

Cost R150 per person per lesson.

The final event of the Helderberg Schools Tag-Team series was held in clean and windless conditions at, The Pipe, on Strand beach. The decision was made to add an extra 15 mins to the normal hour of surfing, in order to give surfers more opportunity to catch the biggest and best waves of the afternoon.

Paul Roos have been hungry for a win and started off brilliantly with Power- Surfer, Stephan Steyn(17), wowing the judges with his effortlessly radical surfing. He was backed up solidly by team mates, Bradley Roberts(14) and Tim Coles(14).

Parel Vallei and Somerset College both had good opportunities but their surfers lacked multiple maneuvers on their waves. The end result seeing an excited Paul Roos taking their first event victory.

The series win however went to Parel Vallei High School. Their two event wins and total points score, saw them top the leader board. They were awarded with a custom handmade wooden surfboard trophy for the school trophy cabinet and bragging rights until next year.

Son Surf School Strand has committed to running the series for every term of 2012, wanting to promote schools surfing in the Boland. Boland Surfing Association will support them in making this possible. We encourage more schools to take part next year and challenge Parel Vallei for the trophy. Thanks to all the surfers, teachers and parents for their support.

It was with the inclusion of a team from Somerset College, in this the second event of the three-meeting series, that forced surfers to be on their guard. Three teams of five surfers each faced off in another 1 hour dual for first place. As team mates waited their turns on the beach, surfers in the water got to work quickly in the strong Southerly wind.

Parel Vallei’s Luke Hamilton (17) produced one of the highlights of the event with a ride on a right hand breaking wave. He impressed the judges displaying control, speed and power with a huge off the lip maneuver, which he dually claimed. The ever consistent Steffen Burrows (14) backed him up with a three wave total into the double figures.

Paul Roos also had a great start to their campaign as Stefan Steyn (16) wowed the spectators with his 360-hop maneuvers. Newcomers, Somerset College were looking good after their opening ride registered 6 points from James Churchman (17), but lost their way a bit after that due to time constraints.

All three teams incurred a 5 point penalty as their last surfers were unable to return to their designated boxes within the allotted 60 mins. After the judges had tallied their scores it was Parel Vallei that continued their winning streak and took a commanding lead going into the final event of 2011 on Monday, November 28^th.
